HIIT stands for high intensity interval training, and is a method of exercising which involves short bursts of vigorous exercise (the ‘high intensity’ part) followed by a period of resting or performing a lower intensity exercise. The simplest example of HIIT is sprinting for 30 seconds, followed by a 30 second walk, followed by sprinting again for 30 seconds, and so on for several cycles over a certain period of time, usually 30 minutes. The idea is to elevate the heart rate as much as possible in the high intensity bursts, while allowing your body to recover during the quick rest in between.
HIIT exercise has a huge range of benefits, and adding a couple of HIIT workouts per week to your existing training regime can help you achieve your health and fitness goals faster. HIIT workouts intensify your body’s fat burning abilities, and have been shown to burn more calories in the hours after your workout than longer, less intense workouts do. It also increases your body’s efficiency in using oxygen, and is beneficial for endurance athletes looking to improve their ability to run, swim or cycle faster and for longer periods of time. Of course, another added bonus of HIIT is that you’ll get your workout done faster, with many of the same benefits of a longer, less intense workout!
